Sonic the Hedgehog is a well-known video game character and the star of the Sonic the Hedgehog series created by Sega. He is an energetic blue hedgehog capable of running super fast and can curl into a ball to defeat his enemies. In most of the games, Sonic races through various levels, gathering power-up rings while dodging obstacles and foes. The character was brought to life by programmer Yuji Naka and artist Naoto Ohshima, with Sonic Team developing the majority of the games.
The first game, Sonic the Hedgehog, was released in 1991 to give Sega a mascot to compete with Nintendo's famous character, Mario. Sonic was later redesigned by Yuji Uekawa in 1998 for Sonic Adventure to appeal to a more mature audience. Over the years, Sonic has become an iconic figure in the gaming world, with his series selling over 80 million copies by 2011. He was even one of the first characters to be added to the Walk of Game in 2005, alongside legendary figures like Mario and Link.
Sonic made his first appearance in video games in 1991's arcade racing game Rad Mobile, where he hung as a decorative ornament. His first playable role occurred in the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog, which introduced his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. Sonic also gained friends along the way, including Tails, a two-tailed fox who joined him in the 1992 sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The third game, Sonic CD, released in 1993, introduced Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend, Amy Rose, and a robotic doppelgänger named Metal Sonic as they traveled through time to secure a bright future.
In 1994, Sonic 3 and its sequel, Sonic & Knuckles continued Sonic and Tails' fight against Robotnik, along with the added challenge of Knuckles, who was misled by Robotnik into believing Sonic was a threat. The saga continued with Sonic 4 (2010–2012), which picked up where Sonic 3 ended, placing Sonic as the sole playable character in episodes that saw the return of Tails and Metal Sonic.
Sonic's adventures didn't stop there. Other games, such as Sonic Chaos (1993), Sonic Advance series (2001-2004), and Sonic Generations (2011) on handheld consoles, kept building Sonic's legacy. Sonic Adventure (1998) marked a return to major gaming for Sonic, where he faced a new enemy named Chaos, controlled by Dr. Robotnik, now called Dr. Eggman. It was the first game with complete voice-over for Sonic!
In Sonic Adventure 2 (2001), Sonic finds himself on the run from the military, and in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), he races through the water city of Soleanna to rescue Princess Elise from Dr. Eggman. The game also introduced a new foe, Silver the Hedgehog. In later titles, such as Sonic Unleashed (2008) and Sonic Colors (2010), the excitement continues as Sonic encounters new challenges and friends while facing villains like Eggman.
